SUPPORT ISLAND BASE

Base FM in partnership with the Fringe District, Ngā Rangatahi Toa & Skinny Jump proudly presents Take it to the streets! To celebrate music month with our local community, we took Base FM’s prime shows, Breakfast & Drive to the streets! – the main road in Kingsland to be exact.

Alongside an all star line up of artists, our mentees stepped up to the plate and performed original songs, and their own renditions of classics.

SYLAS

Representing Mangere, Sylas was first introduced to us through our partner organisation Ngā Rangatahi Toa back in 2019. An aspiring young rapper with great stage presence now learning to also write to original beats. He was mentored by the infamous Sunshine Soundsystem and rapper, KP.

For Take it To the Streets, Sylas stepped up and performed his won rendition of “Changes”.

RYLEE

With an incredibly soulful voice, Rylee has a very unique tone and style. We first met her through a holiday programmes and group song-writing workshop but have since teamed Rylee up with the amazing Sandy Mill (international recording artist) for regular one-on-one mentoring.

Rylee came down to the streets and performed her track “No Lie” alongside Sandy Mill.

KAU

We have been part of Nikau’s journey for a couple of years now since he first joined our Friday Drive crew and been mentored by KP and Dountownbrown. Kau has one of our more developed mentees, having released his first album even called Black Sand. He makes his own beats as well as writing, rapping and producing. His lyrics as well as album title are inspired by his home, Auckland’s the west coast.

Kau has moved up in our Island Base programme and while still closely connected by his mentors, has also become a mentor himself and recently produced a track with the ‘Base Boys’ from Mangere central. Kau jumped on the mic performing an original track “Kick Back”.
