SUPPORT ISLAND BASE

ISLAND BASE YOUTH MENTORING

At Island Base there is a variation of youth mentoring programmes – each are tailored to the partners that we work with, along with the rangatahi’s interests / age / availability. Programmes are a combination of 70:30 active and passive participation, organised and executed by Island Base and facilitated and distributed to a wider audience through Island Base FM and our media partners Niu FM (Pacific Media Network).

We give access to the music world with direct learning from industry leaders and local heroes. Our mentees gain tenable skills in the arts as well as equally important personal development of self-expression, leadership and the courage to ‘find their own voice’.

PODCASTING SESSIONS

The predominant outcome here is to deliver a programme for participants to learn the principles and significance of podcasting as a form of self-expression. Understanding the steps to make a podcast and provide the experience to engage with others through the topics and themes they have chosen for each of their groups. Through ideation, recording and editing audio it gives them exposure to this area of the arts, choosing to continue podcasting or other areas of broadcasting / audio art forms.

Giving students the opportunity to create content for each of their podcasts over the course of the program. Through repetition in the process of brainstorming topics, recording individual segments, with the becoming much more confident in using the equipment and having a recorded conversation about specific topics related to the overall theme of each of their podcasts

Each session or term program can be specifically tailored to work with your schools hours.

ORIGINAL SONG & MUSIC VIDEO

This session is the peak of the creative exploration for the course and goes through writing and recording original lyrics for the selected beat. In some cases the beat may also be created as part of the session. The key to this session is fostering a positive and safe environment for the rangatahi to share their ideas without judgement. It also requires creativity on the part of all facilitators to guide the content of the lyrics and themes of the songs.

ON-AIR EXPERIENCE

The main objectives of this session are to familiarise with the students and establish a good relationship and safe space for the foundation of the course. There is a basic introduction to some sound theory and recording, including microphone technique. This leads into getting to know the basic equipment in the studio and getting on air for the first time.
