SUPPORT ISLAND BASE

In collaboration with Manurewa High School, Island Base delivered the Next Wave programme to students over the course of Term 3 for the first time ever!

Next Wave sessions covered beat-making, DAWs, live performance and mic techniques, songwriting, recording and production and students came away with original songs, demos and new skills. Facilitated by rap and R&B icons Diggy Dupé, Sam V and MELODOWNZ with guest producer Hales, this programme fostered the creativity of passionate up-and-coming musicians and got them networking with the finest Aotearoa has to offer.

With support from our mentors, the students went hard writing and making music in the M1 computer lab during Term 3, and embarking on this creative journey with them was amazing.

These students grew in their confidence and pride in their musicianship and have fostered a supportive and collaborative community. Sessions saw students bouncing ideas off each other while writing lyrics, to being a supportive presence in the recording studio or during showcases on the live mic at the end of sessions.

This year’s Next Wave group have been amazing and watching their growth in their creative process and performance from the start of this programme to now has been great to see.

The jump in skill from our first few lyric writing sessions to seeing the demos come to life in the recording studio in the last few sessions is a world of difference, and we’re so stoked about where these students go next.

A huge shout out to Manurewa High School for teaming up with us and to our partner Lotto NZ, we’re so grateful for your support!
