Confidence Navigating New Waters – Lura Macc’s Re-Exploration of Her Musical Artistry
Lura is a soulful emerging artist with an incredibly poignant view of the world around her and a story to be told of love, loss and history. As someone currently working in the film and TV space, Lura has both a creative and organised mind, but found the idea of starting a music career (something centered on herself rather than others) daunting! Island Base music mentor Miloux met Lura in September of this year, and since then they have embarked on a journey of creativity and self-discovery – including everything from vocal lessons (Lura hasn’t sung on a stage for almost 7 years!), exploring genres, writing, nature walks and even boxing.
Lura started her journey in early 2025, and with an open mind met with several different writers and producers. However, sometimes the expectations of these sessions were overwhelming for herself, or in one case a producer who wasn’t sure how to get the session rolling and called it within an hour. Co-writing is such an individual journey each time, and for artists who don’t have the confidence or experience it can be off-putting when we don’t end up with a finished product. On top of this, being a female artist in a predominantly male space can often lead to female artists taking a back seat and allowing their work to shift in a slightly different direction than intended.
Enter Miloux! Miloux’s focus as an artist mentor for the last few years has been to foster a feeling of certainty and safety in the artists she works for, and for them to feel their voices are just as important in the process of creating music as anyone else’s. Maintaining our identity culturally, musically and personally is what sets music apart.
Lura began to share lyrics, create demos and bring them to Miloux’s home studio to share, and life experiences. Through fortnightly sessions the two artists have so far shared songs, vocal lessons and many cups of coffee. Lura’s musical tastes have revealed themselves to be gentle, soulful rnb, and we have been able to provide her a warm safe space to begin to stretch out and explore this. Lura attended a recording session with Haz Beats and Miloux and commented on how nice it was to work alongside artists who had such long standing history and trust with one another. We have no doubt Lura has already begun forging these relationships herself.
We are so excited to see Lura’s progress and truly hard mahi, among which we’ll see her perform support for Haz and Miloux on the 11th of December playing her original new compositions, and the goal of recording two songs by the end of the year. Add boxing to the mix and we’re excited to see the bond between Lura and Miloux deepen, and some truly beautiful music to be made.
